For athletes that have completed their Learn-to-Row or Camp Argo, and are looking to further develop their skills. This program provides three on-water and one optional land training session. Building on the lessons learned at Camp Argo or in our Junior Learn-to-Row, coaches will help you develop your fitness while teaching you the skills needed to succeed in rowing and in life.
Junior Novice Rowing starts when we get on the water, usually in late March, and runs until the Martha Coffey Frostbite Sprints at the beginning of November. During the winter, athletes from Novice, JV, and Varsity all train together indoors as a team.
Junior Novice athletes attend only a few regattas per year - primarily, the Hogtown Heats and Martha Coffey Frostbite Sprints, although other competitive opportunities are available for those athletes that are interested. A detailed regatta schedule can be found in Appendix C of the Selection Document, here.

This program is for rowers that are aiming to race and succeed at local competitions, or that are aiming to make the Varsity team. Athletes can expect to learn about strength and conditioning, nutrition, and sports psychology, and will train both sculling and sweeping in a variety of boat classes, supervised by an NCCP trained coach.
When athletes have developed strong fitness and rowing skills, they may try out for the Varsity team. Detailed criteria can be found in our Selection Document, here. These tryouts take place at the start of each on-water season - late March (Spring season), early June (Summer season), and late August (Fall season). During the winter, athletes from Novice, JV, and Varsity all train together indoors.
J.V. athletes attend most regattas, culminating in the Row Ontario Championships in late July and the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia at the end of October. A detailed regatta schedule can be found in Appendix C of the Selection Document, linked above.
Contact Junior Varsity Coach Nikki Morrison at juniorcoordinator@argonautrowingclub.com for more information.
For experienced athletes that want to compete at the highest levels and prepare for rowing in College/University. Athletes can expect 6 mandatory on-water training sessions per week, fully supervised by an NCCP certified coach, as well as on-land cross training, both with the team and on their own. Varsity athletes are expected to attend all on-water training sessions.
Athletes are required to try out for the Varsity team. Detailed criteria can be found in our Selection Document, here.
